Matt Cain & Cole Hamels Swing For The Fences 83

Who needs a designated hitter when you have multi-million dollar pitchers like Matt Cain and Cole Hamels! In the top of the third inning San Francisco Giants pitcher Matt Cain struts up to the plate down 1-0 against the Philadelphia Phillies and sends a 1-1 pitch over the left field wall for his first home run of the year and his sixth of his career to even the game at 1. That woke up the offense for the Giants in the third inning, as Buster Posey found himself swinging for the fences with his 2 run shot taking an early at 3-1 lead. In the bottom half inning, Cole Hamels got a chance at redemption and smacked his first career home run over the right field wall, closing the to 3-2.

Henry Schulman the Giants beat writer, San Francisco Chronicle tweeted:

Cain & Hamels not only provided offense, but they also battled into the late innings before being pulled out in the eighth inning at a 5-5 tie.  Cain pitched eight innings giving up 5 runs on 5 hits, 4 strikeouts.  Hamels pitched 7.2 innings, giving up 5 runs on 10 hits and 4 strikeouts.  Both pitchers gave up 3 home runs a piece and neither got a decision. Papelbon came in the 10th inning and gave up a walk to Melky Cabrera, who later advanced to third on Buster Posey’s one out single.  Gregor Blanco came up and hit a bunt single, scoring Cabrera from third to take a 6-5 lead.  Santiago Casilla came in the bottom of the tenth and finished off the Phillies for San Francisco victory.
