Per ESPN’s Mike and Mike in the Morning Show, San Francisco 49ers starting quarterback Alex Smith will not play Monday night versus the Chicago Bears:
“This just in: Chris Mortenson, “Alex Smith will not play tonight against the Bears. He was unable to get clearance from a neurologist one week after suffering a concussion according to sources. Colin Kaepernick will start in Smith’s place in a game that will also feature Jason Campbell because Jay Cutler has also been declared out. So, no Alex Smith and no Jay Cutler in tonight’s huge game on ESPN’s Monday Night Football”
Alex Smith and Jay Cutler both suffered concussion in each team’s respective games last week. Smith was injured on a scramble in which he turned his back late as he began a slide. Rams linebacker Jo-Lonn Dunbar hit Smith hard in the neck area. Smith stayed in the game briefly before being ruled out. Cutler was hit by Texans linebacker Tim Dobbins on a pass in which Cutler stepped up into the pocket and crossed the line of scrimmage before throwing the ball downfield (illegal forward pass).
The Bears will bring considerably more experience into the game with their backup, since Campbell has 70 NFL starts. For his career, Campbell has thrown for 14,511 yards with 60.8% accuracy, 6.75 yards per attempt, with 74 touchdowns, 50 interceptions, and a passer rating of 82.6. Kaepernick, a second year player. has played in nine games and accounted for 241 yards with 61.3% accuracy, 7.77 yards per attempt, 0 touchdowns and 0 interceptions for a passer rating of 86.6.
