ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported via Twitter that Pittsburgh Steelers WR Mike Wallace has no intentions of signing the free agent tender placed on him until “he has to”, and has even threatened to sit out off-season workouts.
While the report has not been confirmed by the Steelers, Schefter is usually right on the money with his information. With the deadline for signing the tender being June 15th, it is very likely that the Steelers front office will halt any and all negotiations until Wallace signs it and reports. He needs one more season under his belt before he can become an unrestricted free agent.
The Steelers are not known to meeting demands of high priced guys, and since no other team is prepared to pay Wallace the outrageous, Larry Fitzgerald type money he wants, it is likely Wallace will report to training camp but miss the off-season activities. His only other alternative is to not sign the tender, at which point the Steelers could pay him significantly less money than the $2.7 million the tender guarantees. Sitting out workouts could falter new offensive coordinator Todd Haley’s progress, however as long as Wallace shows up it’s not likely to be a huge factor.
