The Philadelphia Eagles have snatched the most sought after free agent in the market this year: Nnamdi Asomugha. The New York Jets were considered the front runners for Nnamdi but walked away late Friday evening apparently when the Eagles jumped into the mix. The Cowboys were also interested in Asomugha, but walked away just as the Jets did. The Texans were also in the bidding for Asomugha’s service, but stepped out after signing Jonathan Joseph.
The Eagles recently completed a trade with the Arizona Cardinals that sent Kevin Kolb to the Cardinals in exchange for cornerback Dominique-Rodgers Cromartie and a second round pick. It was believed after that move that the Eagles would no longer be in the Nnamdi sweepstakes, but they slipped in without anyone knowing and signed Asomugha to a 5 year $60 million contract with $25 million guaranteed.
This move gives Philadelphia perhaps the best three corner tandem in the league, with Asomugha, Samuel and Rodgers-Cromartie. I, however, would not be shocked if they dangle Asante Samuel in trade talks. He’s still got a lot in the tank and they could probably get good return for him. This move could put the Eagles over the top. The Eagles have explosive playmakers on both sides of the ball and this move only makes them better. The Eagles are now to be considered the front runners in the NFC East.
