If I were to ask ten people who was the better Quarterback between Peyton Manning and Eli Manning, I’d be stunned if three of those ten said Eli.
If former Giants running back Tiki Barber were one of those ten, he’d tell me that his former teammate Eli was the top Manning.
“I remember having these conversations with people who watched Eli in college, saying, ‘He’s good, but he’s never going to be Peyton, he’s not Peyton.’ Guess what? I thinkhe’s better than Peyton,” Barber said via CBS Sports. “Because of clutch. What matters in sports? It’s winning and losing. You get to the stage and what do you do? Eli’s gotten there and he’s won.”
Barber has somewhat of a point – Peyton has been known since college to not be able to win in big spots, and a 9-11 postseason record shows he’s usually on the losing end, while little brother Eli boasts an 8-3 record, including two Super Bowl MVP’s.
Tiki played with Eli for three years before calling his career finished before the Giants won a Super Bowl, so he didn’t get to experience Eli in the clutch, but he still kept a close eye on his former teammate – and says that when it’s all said and done he could be considered one of the best of all-time.
“For Eli to crack the top five of all time, he’s got to have a 2011 type season a couple more times and win another Super Bowl and be Super Bowl MVP, and then I think he’s in the discussion for the top five of all time,” Barber said.
I’m a big fan of Eli, and a big fan of the game. For me, I’d still put Peyton ahead of Eli. But Barber brings up a very good point. In this league it’s about winning – and Eli has done plenty of that – claiming more Lombardi trophies than his elder.
