Well, that escalated quickly.
As a fan of Discovery’s “Naked and Afraid” series, I was pretty pumped when they made an announcement yesterday saying that three NFL players were going to be featured in a December episode of the series’ second season.
So, I wrote about it, and it gained steam. Appearing on several sports outlets around the internet, many people were talking about the NFL special.
This morning, Torrey Smith and Leon Washington wrote on Twitter that they had no idea what the show was talking about. I reached out to both players to get some clarification based on my report and didn’t get a response.
I received a message from Deb Poquette of Prestige Lifestyle Management shortly after, a PR group that represents Torrey Smith, who was rumored to have been a part of the show and she informed me that this story is completely false. 100% untrue.
We later received a statement from Torrey Smith refuting all claims that he was going to be featured on the show.
“It came to my attention this morning that there were articles circulating about me and two of my NFL colleagues appearing on a television show called Naked & Afraid. I have never done any filming for this show, have never been asked, and do not intend to do so. I honestly have no clue where this came from. It is a complete fabrication.” Smith told Sports-Kings via Prestige.
TMZ reports that Discovery thought it was a joke, and a poorly executed one at that.
But a rep for the Discovery Channel tells us … it simply ain’t true — it was just a poorly executed joke from the social media team because the players are all big Discovery Channel fans … and it wasn’t meant to insinuate the guys would appear on the show.
While I can understand her frustration, my job as a writer is to write the stuff when I see it. I have been a fan of the Discovery series for quite some time, so I follow the account. When I saw the tweet, it intrigued me, and I wrote about it on the sports website I am paid to write for.
Jason LaCanfora of CBS Sports reports that the NFL is investigating the Faux Advertisement as well.
Laurie Goldberg, PR Director for the Discovery channel tweeted that they were simply joking about it to the three players who watch the show and claim that it was never an actual advertisement.
