Following a brutal hit to the back of New Jersey Devils defenseman Anton Volchenkov’s head, Devils head coach Peter DeBoer accused New York Rangers forward Brandon Prust, the perpetrator of the hit on Volchenkov, of head-hunting.
In his post-game press conference following the Devils’ loss in Game 3 of their Eastern Conference Final against the Rangers, DeBoer said that Prust’s hit was “head-hunting, plain and simple” according to ESPN.
The hit in question occurred 3:31 into a scoreless second period. No penalty was assessed to Prust, though there very well may be a fine or suspension coming from the NHL’s supplementary discipline committee (committee here is used loosely, since Vice President of Hockey and Business Development Brendan Shanahan is the one who hands down the discipline).
Here’s the hit, decide for yourself if it was in fact a hockey play, or “head-hunting”.
