WATCH: Nicklas Backstrom scores first regular season hat trick 58

Nicklas Backstrom is known for his amazing stick handling and passing skills, but tonight he has been a scoring machine. Before tonight’s game, Backstrom had only scored one career hat trick that came in the playoffs against Montreal. Tonight was one of those rare moments when Nicklas Backstrom scored a hat trick.

In the second period, Backstrom scored his first goal on a backhand shot that went over Ben Bishop’s glove. Tom Wilson and Nate Schmidt got the assists and the Capitals were up 1-0.

For Backstrom’s second goal, he used his sick stick handling skills to expand the Capitals’ lead. Tom Wilson passed the puck to a waiting Alex Ovechkin, who took the shot at Bishop. The rebound went off trickled through the goalie’s legs and to Backstrom. Backstrom brought the puck back in front of the goal and tipped it in to put the Caps up by two.

To complete the natural hat trick, Alex Ovechkin passed the puck to Backstrom at the middle of the ice. The center settled the puck and ripped the puck between the defender’s legs and past a sliding Ben Bishop. Backstrom’s goal gave the Capitals a 3-0 lead over the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Nicklas Backstrom’s hat trick against the Tampa Bay Lightning was his first hat trick scored in the regular season. Before tonight, he had 17 times where he scored two goals in one game.
