Norv Turner has irrational confidence in Vikings quarterbacks
The Minnesota Vikings have a legitimate QB competition on their hands heading into training camp. Offensive coordinator Norv Turner has said that Matt Cassel. Christian Ponder, and rookie Teddy Bridgewater will all have a chance to win the starting job. That makes sense. What doesn’t make sense is the amount of praise Turner is giving two mediocre guys and a player who hasn’t taken an NFL snap yet.
Turner spoke with KFAN-FM Monday, and for some reason has a ton of confidence in his group of signal callers:
“We’ve got a really, really good group,” he said, explaining that it won’t be hard to parcel out snaps in the apparent three-headed battle. “We get between 120 to 140 snaps during a training camp day and that is plenty enough time for all the guys to work a rotation and give them bigger reps and evaluate them,” Turner said.
“Ponder, I know people like to beat up on him, but I’ve been impressed with Christian,” Turner said. “With his physical ability and the way he’s worked and the progress he’s made. He’s eliminating a lot of the negative plays.”
Obviously this is the status-quo response every coach will give heading into the season. Cassel is expected to get the first crack at the job. Yes, the same Cassel who has 18 touchdowns and 21 interceptions the last two seasons, while completing less than 60% of his passes.
Ponder will most likely be on the back burner, as he’s proven nothing since being drafted in the first round in 2011. He has a 14-20 record as a starter to go with a mind-blowing QB rating of 77.3.
The smart money should be on Bridgewater. It’s not like he’s coming into a competition that already has a front-runner, and I highly doubt he will do any worse than Cassel or Ponder have. I’d be very surprised if he doesn’t end up getting the first shot to start, as that scenario makes the most sense.
Whoever wins the job will be handing the ball to Adrian Peterson the majority of the time, but it sounds like Turner will be fine with the guy that comes out on top heading into September.
