Buffalo Sabres: Likely not done trading
Buffalo, New York: The Buffalo Sabres seem to be the talk of the NHL trade deadline, both on and off the ice. The Sabres traded away longtime goaltender Ryan Miller and Steve Ott on Friday to the St. Louis Blues. In return the Sabres acquired forward Chris Stewart, prospect William Carrier, goaltender Jarsoslav Halak, a first round draft pick and a third round pick. The third round pick turns into a first round pick if Miller resigns, or the Blues make the Western Conference Finals.
It seems likely that the players the Sabres picked up in the trade are right back on the market. The rumors are firing that Stewart could be shipped to Ottawa and Halak could be shipped out to Minnesota. The Senators have had interest in Stewart for some time, but are worried that Buffalo’s asking price is to high. Halak to the Wild on the other hand has great potential. With Backstrom, the goaltender for the Wild, struggling and going downhill fast, the Wild are looking to fill the space between the pipes. Halak could be the answer, even though he does become a free agent at the end of the season. It wouldn’t be to hard to resign him though. With the talent on the team, Pominville, Parise, Koivu, Suter and Heatly, who wouldn’t want to resign there.
Although the Sabres already have 10 draft picks in the first and second rounds in the 2014 and 2015 drafts, don’t be surprised to see the Sabres get up to 13 or 14 picks by the deadline. They can easily get picks for players like Christian Ehrhoff, Matt Moulson, Tyler Myers, Halak and Stewart. These names are all rumored to be on the market for the Sabres. Many teams have showed interest in all these players as well.
Ehrhoff seems to be drawing the most interest. He is under contract through the 2015 season and his total remaining salary is only $18 million. The teams we are hearing as a possible landing spot are the LA Kings and Detroit Red Wings. The Wings seem to be the better fit since they are in need of a defensive player who can shoot and score. They are offering a first round pick to the Sabres. The LA Kings have made an offer, but the deal with them includes Matt Moulson. This is a 1st and 3rd round pick in the 2014 draft, Tanner Pearson and Matt Greene.
Tyler Myers has had interest from the Red Wings and Oilers. The red Wings are also offering a first round pick and a prospect. The Oilers have offered Nugent-Hopkins and a pick. The Avalanche have also showed interest and offered Ryan O’Reilly.
These are just a few of the names on the Sabres that could be dealt by tomorrow’s trade deadline. We will keep you updated on all the late breaking trade news, here at around the rink.
