Did the Yankees reject Reds’ trade offer of Brandon Phillips for Brett Gardner?
Earlier tonight, the New York Post broke the news that the Cincinatti Reds were interested in Yankees OF Brett Gardner. Now it looks like the Yankees have turned down a deal that would have shipped Gardner to the Reds and given them Golden Glove 2B Brandon Phillips.
According to SB Nation’s Pinstripe Alley and Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, the talks at the Winter meetings between the Yankees and Reds resulted in a deal sending Gardner to Cincinnati and Brandon Phillips to New York. Yankees GM Brian Cashman has stated that even though he isn’t incredibly eager to trade Gardner, he will consider it if it’ll make the team better.
“The only way I am interested in moving Brett Gardner is somehow feeling we are putting ourselves in a position to feel better about ourselves in the short and long run,’’ Cashman said Wednesday at the Winter Meetings. “Or it would have to be with this move combined with some other things somehow when the dust settles is supposed to make sense.’’
Cashman said he has had “a lot of calls on Brett’’ after the Ellsbury signing, but doesn’t sound like a man looking to deal from strength.
