In just three short weeks the feeding frenzy and the new league year kicks into full effect. The franchise tag is placed on just one player for each team once a year, that time is now until March third. In doing so the New York Giants would be able to retain the rights to a given player for this year, unless they were to decide a trade is more beneficial. However, the Giants are a team that rarely uses the tag, but when they do a long term deal is usually right behind it. Last season punter Steve Weatherford was assigned the franchise tag and before the deadline for agreeing to a new deal came about, the two sides struck a four year deal.
