Geno Smith on the Verge of Losing Jets Starting QB Battle
Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports that Mark Sanchez is close to winning the Jets quarterback battle against rookie Geno Smith.
According to Mehta, Jets GM John Idzik is trying his best to help Geno Smith become the starting quarterback for the team, but he’s right on the verge of losing that battle. It looks as though Mark Sanchez might keep his starting QB position after all.
Sanchez hasn’t won the job yet, but he’ll have earned the right to be the Week 1 starter against the Buccaneers on Sept. 8 if he plays well in the first half on Saturday.
Editors note: Sanchez, as of this writing, went 12-20 for 138 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT to finish with a QB rating of 76.7.. is that enough to net him the starting job?
Another source, NFL Trade Rumours:
While the feeling is Sanchez has won the job “fair and square“, an ankle injury suffered has been the cause of Smith’s undoing. Idzik has insisted on providing any type of help necessary for him to win the job, but the plan has backfired for Smith as his health has failed to improve, which led to a “brutal” week of practice.
One has to question what Rex Ryan’s involvement in this entire debacle is… is this more of the Jets circus parading around? Or does it seem to me like there is a rivalry brewing between Rex Ryan (who has 100% supported Mark Sanchez, the quarterback he moved up to draft in his inaugural season with the Jets) and GM John Idzik, who seems to be all for a new beginning with Geno Smith at the helm.
Who do you think will win the starting job?
Geno Smith or Mark Sanchez?
