Giants rookie Andre Williams fuels Jets rivalry

Who doesn’t like a bitter rivalry when it comes to sports?  Especially when the two teams not only share a city, but also share a stadium.

There has always been some sort of rivalry between the Jets and the Giants, although it’s never too serious as the team’s only play each other in the regular season once every four years.  However, they do have an annual pre season game that should be interesting this year after the comments made by one Giants rookie.

Andre Williams took a page out of Rex Ryan’s playbook by making controversial comments before a game.  According to George Willis of the New York Post, Williams thinks that the Giants are the “real New York team.”

From the NY Post:

Rookie running back Andre Williams is eager to find out what the Giants-Jets rivalry is about.  But he already is a fast learner in some respects.

“I think the Giants are the real New York team,” Willams said after Big Blue went through a spirited practice on Tuesday in preparation for Friday’s annual preseason showdown at MetLife Stadium.

A rookie declaring “the Giants are the real New York team,” might sound a little ostentatious, but Willams, a fourth-round pick out of Bostom College is far from that.  That wasn’t really trash talk.  More than anything, his comment simply is a show of support for his team and not so much a knock against the Jets.

“This is my first year and I’m not too sure about what’s going on with the rivalry thing,” Williams admitted.  “But there’s defintiely a different feeling this week than last week.  I’m just trying to buy into it.”

The different feeling might be due toa  few things.  For starters, the Giants are still trying to jump-start their offense, which has done little in three preseason games.  There is an obvious sense of urgency as the Sept. 8 opener at Detroit draws closer.  Also, training camp offically has ended, and the practice sessions are being structured closer to an actual game-week preparation.

With the bold proclamation by Williams, you would think he actually would fit in better with the Jets led by their brash head coach Ryan and confident players.  Williams has looked good so far this preseason and is looking to continue where he left off at Boston College.  Williams was a finalist for the Heisman Trophy last year when he rushed for 2,102 yards on 329 carries.

The GIants and Jets partake in their annual preseason game this Friday at 730 PM.
