Islanders top Devils in shootout
Well THIS is quite a way to start a season!
Despite the fact that Islanders star John Tavares had a pretty quiet night, the Islanders pulled out a 4-3 shootout win over the Devils in their season opener last night. Lineman Matt Moulson scored the only goal of the shootout in the sixth round, Evgeni Nabokov looked strong in the net with 26 saves and Michael Grabner had two goals and an assist.
“We had some mistakes, but we had some really good stuff in there. It’s the first game and we got the win. Now we have to go back to work tomorrow.” Michael Grabner said after his two goal performance in the opener.
Brunner tied the game at 3 with 7:34 left in the third period with his second goal of the game. This was just after a Devils power play expired. Defenseman Anton Volchenkov came off the bench and shot the puck toward the net. It deflected to Brunner and he slid it in for an easy goal.
This is the first of five times the Islanders and Devils, metropolitan division foes, play each other this season. Last year, the Islanders won the season series 3-2.
Surprisingly, this is the first time the Islanders have won a season opener since 2007 according to ESPN New York. That shows how rough the team has had it in the last few years, but could this year be different?
