After his first year as the Brooklyn Nets head coach, it is safe to say that Jason Kidd did as good of a job as you could expect. Apparently, Kidd isn’t satisfied with merely being the head coach, though. According to Tim Bontemps of the New York Post, Kidd approached Nets management demanding a position to run the teams basketball operations, which he was denied. Now, the Milwaukee Bucks have requested, and been granted permission by the Nets to speak with Kidd about a position in their organization:

According to a league source, Kidd recently approached ownership with a series of demands, including the role of overseeing the Nets’ basketball operations department in addition to his head coaching responsibilities. The source said Kidd didn’t want general manager Billy King to be dismissed, but wanted to be given a title and placed above him in the organizational hierarchy.

Ownership declined to grant Kidd that kind of power, which is rare for any coach in the league to have.

The franchise then was approached by the Bucks for permission to speak with Kidd about the prospect of hiring him, and the Nets granted permission.

Update: Apparently, Bucks coach Larry Drew and the front office were unaware the team had made a request to speak with Kidd, indicating the request may have come directly from their new owners. Ken Berger of CBS Sports says that co-owner Marc Lasry is “close” with Kidd; Berger also adds that a return to the Nets for Kidd is unlikely.

We have seen glimpses of Kidd’s desire to have control, especially during the Lawrence Frank situation, where Kidd essentially banished Frank for disagreeing with his way of running some of the team’s schemes. If the Nets had overachieved, Kidd may have had more leverage to make a power play like this, but only being a first year head coach, though he was impressive, he hardly has the resume necessary to hold a position very few coaches around the league can claim.

If this is enough for Kidd to jump ship to the Bucks, who may be looking for a change at coach after just changing ownership, then so be it. The Nets organization is full of strong-minded people, starting with Mikhail Prokhorov, and I highly doubt he will bullied into making a decision he doesn’t feel is best for the team.
