Rangers @ Flyers Preview

The Flyers host the Rangers at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia Thursday night. The Rangers, with a record of 2-5, are off to a rocky start, however, not quite as rocky as the Flyers, with a record of 1-7. Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist will miss Thursday’s game, coach  Alain Vigneault said Wednesday. An official diagnosis has yet to be confirmed, but the injuries are said to be “minor.”

This will make the first game this season that Lundqvist will miss, adding him to the list of injured Rangers. Also missing Thursday’s game is Ryan Callahan-out with a broken thumb, Carl Hagelin-out with a shoulder injury and Rick Nash-out with a concussion.

Cam Talbot--who plays his first NHL game Thursday night against the Flyers.

Thursday nights game against the Flyers also marks the NHL debut of 26-year-old Rangers goalie Cam Talbot, and serving as Talbot’s backup is Jason Missiaen, who is expected to be recalled from the Hartford Wolfpack.

With Lundqvist behind the net, the Rangers have given up a league-worst 4.14 goals per game. Even having one of the NHL’s best goalies has not helped this struggling Rangers team, so maybe having two rookies goalies, with zero NHL experience, is just what that this team needs. It should be interesting to see if the Rangers will step up and rally behind Talbot.

The Flyers, on the other hand, have the worst record in the league and are having issues scoring goals–especially on the power play.

Flyers captain, Claude Giroux, is confident that the team will make the playoffs, declaring that despite frustration, there is still plenty of hockey to play.

” We’re not far at all. How many points are we off, six? To think that with the start we had, we’re that close. We’ve never thought that we’re not going to make the playoffs” Giroux said to reporters on Flyers.com.

With both teams struggling and the Rangers plagued with injuries, the Rangers will need to rally behind their rookie goalie and it will be interesting to see if Giroux, who has yet to score a goal, can lead this Flyers team to turn their season around.
