Al Jefferson admits he’s not a good defender

Al Jefferson

Newly acquired Charlotte Bobcat, Al Jefferson, has never earned praise over his defensive abilities. Jefferson has always been known for his polished post-game, and ability to simply put the ball in the cup on offense. His defense has always been suspect. Jefferson was known as a defensive liability in Utah, and the criticism went with him when he moved on to Charlotte this past off-season.

Now, Jefferson is even admitting that his defense is something that needs improving.

“It ain’t no secret around the league that I struggle with my defense,” Jefferson said. “My pick-and-roll defense is my weakness. And that’s mind over matter. I just gotta suck it up, get my ass out there, and do it.”

The defensive prowess of Jefferson will need to improve if he’s to lead the Bobcats away from being the league’s laughing stock. The Bobcats are 62-168 over the course of the past three seasons. Their last playoff appearance was in 2010, where they were swept by the Orlando Magic in the first round.

The Bobcats have hung around at the bottom so long that it has garnered them some solid young pieces, in Kemba Walker, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist and Cody Zeller. The Bobcats are surely relying on Jefferson to, not only bring them a go-to-guy on offense, but to also provide them with stable leadership, something this team has lacked for a very long time.
