Andrew Bynum won’t play in the first round of the playoffs for the Pacers

Another chapter has been added to the never-ending  “Andrew Bynum isn’t ready yet” saga. Via ESPN:

Coach Frank Vogel said Thursday that he believes the Pacers’ oft-injured center still could work his way back for the playoffs. But he won’t be available for the first round, which opens Saturday in Indianapolis.

The key phrase in this snippet is “could work his way back for the playoffs.” That implies that it’s no slam dunk he’s back for the second round or even the conference finals. The Pacers probably don’t need him to get past the Hawks and the winner of the Washington/Chicago series, but they would like to have him as a tool against the Heat in the conference finals. The Pacers better hope he’s healthy by then, otherwise this signing will have been a complete waste.
