Blake Griffin to get a 5 year maximum contract from the Clippers
This was only a matter of time, right?
Since his rookie season, power forward Blake Griffin has taken the league by storm, averaging 22 points and 12 boards over his young career. The Clippers finally made a good draft pick with Griffin a few years ago, and they’re not about to let him go.
Come July 1st, the Clippers will sign Griffin to a 5 year max deal. This is reminiscent of the Kevin Durant extension a few years ago in the sense that it was expected by many, but both parties were very quiet about the matter until the deal was done.
Griffin is one of the league’s best power forwards, and it looks like he’ll be a huge part of their future, which is largely dependent on what Chris Paul decides to do.
The Clippers acquired Paul last season from the Hornets, but he has yet to commit to the franchise for the long term. Griffin signing the extension will probably help the Clippers keep Paul, but it’s still up in the air.
But for now, it’s nice to see Blake get rewarded for all the work he’s put in and the energy that he has brought not only to a previously dead Clippers franchise, but to the league as a whole.
