Danilo Gallinari will miss the remainder of the season

The Denver Nuggets received some bad news today regarding their 25-year-old forward, Danilo Gallinari. After rehabbing from a torn ACL that took place nine months ago, Gallinari went under the knife again Tuesday. Initially, Gallinari had surgery to repair a torn meniscus because the doctor believed that ACL surgery was unnecessary. Now, Danilo will have to miss the entire year because of the doctor’s error in judgement.

Via Adrian Wojnarowski/Yahoo Sports:

Nine months after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, Denver Nuggets forward Danilo Gallinari will miss the entire 2013-14 season after having reconstructive surgery on Tuesday.

Shortly after suffering the knee injury in an April 4 game against the Dallas Mavericks, Gallinari had surgery to repair a torn meniscus but the ACL reconstruction was delayed. There had been a belief on the doctor’s part that the ACL could be strengthened to play again without the traditional procedure, but that never happened, sources said.

This is a devastating blow for the Nuggets, as they are trying to climb back into the playoff race. At 20-20, the team sits only three games out of the eight seed in the Western Conference. Gallinari would have been a nice piece to add coming down the stretch of the NBA season. Nuggets brass and fans might not like this, but the team probably is better off trying to get a good lottery pick in a loaded draft instead of trying to land the eighth seed in the rugged Western Conference.

Gallinari averaged 16.3 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game last year for the Denver Nuggets.

Gallinari had the initial knee surgery done at the Steadman Clinic in Vail, Colo. The initial procedure to correct the ACL injury was called “Healing Response.” It was later determined full reconstructive surgery was needed.
