BREAKING: Washington Wizards-Phoenix Suns Complete Big Trade

  • PTP Staff

This trade between the Suns and Wizards comes as a bit of a shock with no inkling or rumor that any deal was purported with these two teams. Yet here the completed trade is shaking things up, well, for the Eastern Conference anyway.

Via Yahoo!’s Adrian Wojnarowski:

This is quite the deal for both teams. The Suns, whether they would like to admit it or not, are nowhere near contending for a playoff spot this season and have begun to look towards the future, or very near future in this case. They now have four first-round picks in the 2014 NBA Draft, which should be ripe with talent and potential.

The future could be very bright for Phoenix after this season.

For Washington, they add a very good center in Marcin Gortat who is coming off a bit of a down year. His effectiveness on the glass, especially as an offensive rebounder, gives Washington a bit more stability in the front-court along with Nene. He should be an excellent pick-and-roll partner with either John Wall or Bradley Beal.

Not only did they net Gortat, they also received Shannon Brown, the uber-athletic shooting guard who adds depth to a team lacking a scoring punch off the bench. Also sent in the trade were guards Malcolm Lee and Kendall Marshall. Both are relatively unproven in the NBA so far but Marshall’s passing ability on offense is a definitive plus. If he can find a way to improve his defense and shooting, he might be able to make some contributions off the bench.

This trade immediately bumps the Wizards into the playoff discussion as they have solidified a front-court lacking quality on offense. Gortat’s presence in the post and as a pick-and-roll player will quick benefit Wall and Beal and make them more potent on offense. Nene can move to his more suitable power forward position and gives Washington some serious size in the paint on both offense and defense.

Phoenix is looking to turn these draft picks they’ve acquired into a great foundation from next year’s draft along with promising young guards Eric Bledsoe and Goran Dragic. With some cap space coming into them after this season, they will have a lot of wiggle room to make deals and maybe become an intriguing destination for free agents for the next couple years.

Great deal for both teams.
