Carmelo Anthony accompanied by personal bodyguard in Boston

Thursday night is the first time Carmelo Anthony and the Knicks will see Kevin Garnett and the Boston Celtics since KG’s infamous “Cheerios” comments during their game at Madison Square Garden on January 7th. This time the game is in Boston, and despite Anthony and Garnett’s claims of their beef being resolved, Melo still isn’t taking chances with Celtics’ fans. That is why Melo will be accompanied by his own personal bodyguard.

Celtics’ fans are known as some of the most unforgiving fans in all of sports, and given the bad blood that tends to run between Boston and New York sports clubs and their loyal fan bases, this move may be in Anthony’s best interest. In fact, being under the protection of your own security is nothing new when it comes to pro athletes, or NBA players in particular.

“It is not uncommon for superstar players, Kobe Bryant for example, to have their own security detail.” Writes Frank Isola of the New York Daily News. ”The Knicks employ two security guards that are with the team at all times while Anthony’s bodyguard occasionally travels to road games.”

The fact that Melo has went out of his way to control any looming trouble is a great sign for star that is expected to lead his franchise deep into the post season. The awareness of a situation that could get out of hand speaks lengths to Carmelo’s maturity as a player, and as a true team leader.

Expect the Knicks to be out for blood (on the court) and for Melo to continue his bid for MVP against a division foe on the road.
