Cavs and Bulls discussing Deng for Bynum trade

The Cavs and Bulls are discussing a Deng for Bynum swap

The Chicago Bulls are reliving the worst possible scenario as they lost Derrick Rose for the season yet again. At 12-17 the Bulls are hardly out of the putrid Eastern Conference race, but realistically any chance of them making a deep run in the playoffs is out the window. The next logical thing the Bulls brass is looking at is ways to shed salary seeing that the team is about $8 million into the luxury tax. Luol Deng has been a hot rumor for quite some time and he may be the first player to go seeing that he’s got a nice expiring deal and could help a team looking to make a push.

The Cavs also have had separate discussions with the Chicago Bulls about a Bynum trade forLuol Deng, according to sources. The Bulls are in a similar position as the Lakers, about $8 million into the luxury tax and dealing with an injury-marred season.

Deng, like Gasol, is a free agent-to-be, and such a trade-and-waive deal with Bynum also could save the Bulls in excess of $20 million in salary and taxes this season. However, the Bulls have maintained that they do not want to trade Deng and believe they will be able to re-sign him after the season.

By the Bulls waiving Bynum that would allow the one time all-star to once again be a free agent. Although the former Lakers center has a lot of baggage, it’s hard to find seven-foot centers in this era that are capable of dominating both ends. Hopefully this doesn’t become a recurring theme for Bynum as his chances to catch on with a team could dwindle dramatically.

For the Cavaliers, bringing in a veteran like Deng could help turn their season around. The Cavs need a small forward who can defend and hit the three. The Cavs could stick Deng on the opposing team’s best perimeter player while also providing Kyrie Irving with a nice second banana on offense. The 28-year-old Deng is averaging 19.6 points per game to go along with 4.1 assists and 7.0 rebounds on the season.
