Danny Granger on the Pacers lack of media attention: “We take it a little personal”

When it comes to being considered a contender in the NBA, the list has an exclusive clientele. The Chicago Bulls, the Miami Heat, the Oklahoma City Thunder, the San Antonio Spurs and The Los Angeles Lakers, to name a few.

One team that never seems to grab anyone’s attention is the 40-22 Indiana Pacers. The Pacers are currently in command of the Eastern Conference’s 3rd seed and look like they will host a series against the Orlando Magic or even the New York Knicks in the first round of the 2012 NBA playoffs.

So why no focus on this talented squad? It’s pretty simple logic. The Pacers are a small market club and they lack a true superstar. Two things that translate into heavy media attention.

The don’t have a Derrick Rose, LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant or a Tim Duncan. The team isn’t based out of New York City or Los Angeles. The fact that an excellent club like the Pacers doesn’t receive more admiration for what they’re doing is sad, but not in any way shocking. The NBA is all about the lights of the big city and the name on the player’s back.

“We take it a little personal,” said forward Danny Granger, who leads the Pacers’ balanced scoring attack at 18.8 points a game. “But we’re a small market. A thing about being a small market is that you don’t get the national media coverage like some of the other teams.”

This club doesn’t have any special gimmicks, or any players who you’ll see in every other commercial on TV. But they do have heart and they have the sort of club that can get things done. This team has some similarities to the early 2000’s Detroit Pistons. A great collective group of talented players. Maybe the league isn’t giving them enough credit.

Sleeping on a team like Indiana could cost some of the league’s so-called elite teams come post season.
