With all the fuss surrounding the 2012 US Olympic team and the 1992 “Dream Team” and who is superior, it seems like everyone wants to chime in. Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley have been very clear on what their stance is, believing that they were far and away the better team. Guys like Kobe Bryant and LeBron James believe they could have beaten the Dream Team.

When having this argument, it is important to note that the international competition is far better now than it was in 1992. The Dream Team, in my opinion, is significantly better than the 2012 team. That being said, the ’92 team never really had any significant competition.

One of the major differences between the two teams is the strength of big men. This year’s team features Tyson Chandler, Kevin Love, and Anthony Davis as the primary bigs. The ’92 team had much better bigs, one of them being David Robinson.

When dragged into this debate, David Robinson had some insightful input.

Kobe Bryant said that this year’s United States Olympic men’s team could beat the Dream Team. Do you agree?

I give Kobe a lot of credit for standing up for his team. I think this team has some great players and some unstoppable scorers. They could beat us on any given day. But on the whole, I think there’s still some things they have to prove to themselves and everybody else.

What David Robinson had to say is extremely reasonable. Even if you believe that the Dream Team was the superior team, it is ridiculous to think that they could never lose to this team. There is a significant difference between being the better team and being able to win on any given night.

That being said, I would like to see how the 2012 team matches up against guys like David Robinson and Patrick Ewing. Tyson Chandler is a very good defender, but he tends to get in foul trouble in international competition. And as much potential as Anthony Davis has, I’m not sure he could body up on Patrick Ewing.

I’m sure Michael Jordan would have a response to this, but it’s nice to see someone on the Dream Team being reasonable.
