With the future of the Celtics roster in jeopardy, as Kevin Garnett contemplates retirement and general manager Danny Ainge is trying to figure out what to do with long-time staple Paul Pierce, it seems that there may be a change at head coach as well. Doc Rivers, who is beloved by Celtics players and fans alike, is considering leaving the Celtics according to Chris Broussard of ESPN. Specifically, Rivers simply said that it “may be time for a change”

Here is more from Broussard’s report:

“Doc loves coaching,” the source told ESPN. “He loves coaching in Boston. But he feels it may be time for a change.”

Rivers, who has been attending the Celtics’ pre-draft workouts, is unsure of what he wants to do and has not yet ruled out returning to Boston for a 10th season. He has a very close relationship with Ainge, and the source said that is one factor that is making his decision so difficult.

The most peculiar part of this report seems to be its timing for Rivers and the C’s. If Rivers wanted to leave Boston, the decision should have probably came a bit earlier for both parties, as the Celtics may have trouble finding an adequate replacement with most teams already full-fledged in their coaching searches. The Celtics would surely want to make a splash in the coaching department, and the Celtics job is obviously one of the best in the business. You would think the usual list of high-profile suspects would be interested, specifically recently unemployed Lionel Hollins and George Karl.

Rivers, however, has other options, such as broadcasting, or simply taking some time off and waiting for the right job. However, Rivers would be a hot commodity if he hit the open market, and teams such as the Brooklyn Nets and the Los Angeles Clippers, both who were denied the right to interview the Celtics coach earlier this offseason, may be hesitant to name a head coach with Rivers’ situation in Boston up in the air.

Either way, a decision must be made sooner rather than later so both parties don’t have to scramble to find other options.
