Draft prospect: Greg Oden ‘looks unbelievable’ in workouts

The story of Greg Oden may turn out to be one of the most disappointing in NBA history if he cannot successfully make a comeback. Oden, who was selected first overall by the Portland Trailblazers, has seen his career derailed by injuries, and is only known for stupid decisions otherwise. What definitely has not helped his case is the success of the guy taken after him, some dude named Kevin Durant, who is, well, pretty good. However, there appears to be some promising signs for Oden, as a draft prospect, Deshaun Thomas, who also attended Ohio State, has said Oden ‘looks unbelievable’ in their workouts together.

Here are some more details via Yahoo! Sports and the News-Herald:

Former Ohio State top scorer Deshaun Thomas, a potential second round pick despite his refusal to give up his cell phone number like some gallivantin’ hussy, has been working out in Indy with Greg Oden. And according to Bob Finnan at the News-Herald, Oden’s workouts have been something else; according to the young one. Here’s Thomas’ take:

“Man, he looks unbelievable,” he said at the draft combine. “He’s running. He’s lifting weights. You might be seeing a comeback. He looks like he’s ready to go. He’s running, getting in shape. I’ll tell you one thing. For a big 7-footer that’s all he does, running and getting in shape. He’s looking right.”

I would be getting a little more excited about this if Thomas didn’t go to the same school as Oden. Thomas’ quotes sound more like a hopeful friend than an objective third party. I am not faulting him for it, but it does make me doubt if Oden is truly as good as Thomas THINKS he is. I have consistently been of the opinion that Oden can and will make a comeback in the right situation, with a successful team that can manage his minutes and expectations. Reportedly, the Miami Heat have shown interest in Oden, and a situation like that would be perfect for him, where he can play 15-20 minutes, and have minimal responsibilities, especially offensively.

Let’s hope Oden can make this happen, because many forget just how special he was to watch when he was on the floor.
