Fans Throw Bottles On Court After T-Mac Plays Only 98 Seconds
Once one of the most electric and exciting players in the NBA, Tracy McGrady landed in China for this season after failing to find an NBA suitor. He lost his explosiveness and athleticism over the past few years, and it was clear that his game fell off a cliff pretty quickly.
Nonetheless, the na me Tracy McGrady itself and the idea of watching him play excited many Chinese basketball fans. Remember, McGrady was teammates with Chinese star Yao Ming when they both played on the Rockets, meaning fans in China were already familiar with T-Mac.
So when he barely played in an exhibition game, you can bet the fans were pretty upset. Via China Daily:
In a cold gymnasium (reportedly 5 degrees above zero) in Binzhou, Shandong province, former NBA All-Star Tracy McGrady of the Qingdao Eagles refused to play after being on court for only 98 seconds of an exhibition game on Tuesday.
Fans, who paid a lot to watch T-Mac, were disappointed and threw bottles onto the court to complain about McGrady’s stance. Referees ended the match prematurely in a chaotic fourth quarter.
“The fans’ support was warm but the gym was too cold. Letting him play might get him hurt. We were worried,” Qingdao General Manager Sheng Xishun said.
First of all, why is the gym only 5 degrees? Could you imagine the outrage that NBA players would have if they had to play under that condition?
You really can’t blame the fans for being upset, but throwing bottles is too much. There are reasons more players don’t play overseas, and this is a perfect example. Who wants to play in 5 degree conditions, then have the fans throwing bottles onto the court, then have the game be cancelled because it’s too chaotic?
