George Karl Endorses Gregg Popovich For Next USA Coach
Team USA Basketball is currently in the market for a new head coach, and there are plenty of very good candidates. George Karl, Gregg Popovich, and Doc Rivers have been just a handful of names tossed around in speculation, all of whom would be solid choices.
If you ask George Karl who should get the job, however, he has no problem conceding the honor to Gregg Popovich. Karl believes that Coach Pop is the best man for the job, via the Denver Post.
“I hope he gets the USA job,” Karl said. “I think he wants it. He’s a military guy who, I think, brings a dignity to representing the United States, and he’s also earned the respect of the basketball world.”
Popovich said all the right things when reporters asked him about coaching Team USA, saying it would be an honor. The name of Boston’s Doc Rivers has been thrown out there too.
I asked Karl, who coached Team USA in 2002, if he would want to be an assistant on Pop’s staff for Team USA.
“If he would present me that opportunity, I would definitely have to consider it,” Karl said, seemingly honored even at the suggestion.
It would be tough for anyone to refute that Gregg Popovich would be a great pick for the job. Whether or not he would want to do it is another story, as is also the case with many of the players who might not want to take time out of their offseason.
Whoever the new coach ends up being, I’m sure the team will be just fine, as long as guys like LeBron James and Kevin Durant are leading the way.
