Gregg Popovich Still Doesn’t Know Rules On Resting Players
Gregg Popovich made the news in a big way when he decided to rest Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, Tony Parker, and Danny Green for a nationally televised game against the Miami Heat. Popovich said he had planned on doing it all season, as the Spurs were at the end of a long road trip, and wanted to find some rest for his veteran players.
David Stern fined the Spurs $250,000 for it, and the league caught a lot of criticism regarding the decision. Popovich has done this for years, and had yet to be disciplined until this season.
Now, Gregg Popovich claims that he still doesn’t know the rules, and tends to not really care. Via My San Antonio:
Popovich said that’s the last word he’s heard from the league office on the issue.
“I don’t know what the guidelines are,” Popovich said before the Spurs’ 111-86 victory at Dallas on Sunday. “I don’t know how you plan. I’m just going to do what I’ve been doing for 16, 17 years.
“I’m mostly concerned with the health and safety of my players, especially the ones who are a little bit older. When they need rest, I’m going to give it to them.”
