Historic Night, Collins Makes History
“I love basketball, basketball is fun” says Jason Collins, who recently signed a 10 day contract with the Brooklyn Nets (26-28), Collins who played 10 minutes in his Nets debut, made NBA History, becoming the first openly gay player to step onto the NBA hardwood as his Nets defeated the Lakers 108-102 on Sunday night as Collins received a humble cheer and welcome from the NBA fans.
Jason Collins (35) checked in during the second quarter, with 10:28 to go with the Nets up 35-26 Sunday night, Adam Silver, the new commissioner of the NBA, went on to congratulate him, “Today, I want to commend him on achieving his goal.” said Silver. Another popular quote was NBA TV’s own Vince Cellini says “This is easily the most important 10 day contract in league history” Cellini said as NBA TV was getting underway before the Nets, Lakers game.
Collins, was the 18th overall pick in 2001, being drafted by Houston, he has played for six teams in 12 seasons, last played for the Wizards in 2013. He has averaged 3.6 points per game and 3.8 rebounds threw out his long career, he announced he was gay on April 29th, 2013.
