Jason Collins’ Jersey Was Tuesday’s Top Seller
Rightfully so, there has been a plethora of media attention around the Brooklyn Nets signing of Jason Collins, making him the first openly gay player in any of the four major sports. Though he sported the number 46 in his opening game with the team, Collins’ regular number will be 98, which he wears in honor of the death of Matthew Shepard, who was the victim of a hate crime because he was a homosexual.
Today was the first day that Collins’ jersey was on sale for purchase from NBA.com, which is unusual for a player on a ten-day contract to begin with. However, the NBA was definitely wise to put the jersey on the market, as it was the site’s top seller today. This is definitely a symbolic step for the league, showing the support Collins has from teammates and fans alike.
On the court, Collins did what he has always been known for in the NBA: a guy who will never wow you statistically, but is a reliable NBA rotation player. His debut for the Nets against the Lakers didn’t blow away on the box score, only grabbing two rebounds and failing to score in his 11 minutes of action, but playing consistent defense, and setting solid screens throughout the contest.
I would bet the support will continue to roll in for Collins, and sales will continue to blossom, but it won’t mean as much to Collins if he can’t play well enough to earn a second ten-day deal.
