Time Magazine puts out a list every year of its 100 most influential people, and this year Nets center Jason Collins made the list for his bravery to come out as a gay athlete and go on to compete in the NBA. Some people may find what Collins did to not be all that big of a deal because he was washed up, at the end of his career, and just a guy who would spend most of his time warming the bench. But those who think that miss the mark. The significance of Collins coming forward as gay and still playing in the NBA is huge because of what he inspires others to do. He inspires other LGBT athletes to come forward and no longer be afraid of facing discrimination. The bottom line is that nobody should be afraid to hide their sexuality because they fear being subject to discrimination, and unfortunately sports has often been an arena that is close-minded towards the LGBT community. Collins definitely took a huge step towards changing how the LGBT community is perceived in sports, which is why  him making Time Magazine’s list of 100 most influential people is warranted. He broke a barrier that hadn’t yet been broken and he has inspired many other LGBT athletes to be open about who they are while still being able to pursue athletic excellence.
