Marcin Gortat, Taj Gibson

Marcin Gortat, or Polish Hammer, whichever name you prefer, has agreed to a five-year, $60 million extension with the Washington Wizards on Tuesday.

Gortat was instrumental in the Wizards’ late season succes, including a first-round win over the favored Chicago Bulls in the 2014 NBA Playoffs. The Wizards would eventually lose to the one-seeded Indiana Pacers, but Gortat’s contributions wouldn’t go unnoticed throughout.

This contract will likely keep the 30-year old Gortat in the Nation’s Capital for the remainder of his career. The Polish-born big man has had a solid NBA career with teams like the Orlando Magic and Phoenix Suns, before winding up in Washington with John Wall and company.

Gortat played 81 games with the Wizards last season, averaging 13.2 points and 9.5 rebounds per contest. This is an overall solid move for the Wizards, as Gortat brings defensive and hustle to a team who will be looking to build off of last season’s success.
