Mark Cuban Takes Shot at NFL, predicts “implosion”
Mark Cuban will never be known for being at a loss for words, and that doesn’t seem to be changing anytime soon. However, instead of taking shots at referees, and literally paying the price to the NBA commissioners office, Cuban is now focusing on the NFL.
With NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and the league agreeing to a new, extended TV package next year that has CBS broadcasting Thursday Night Football, Cuban predicts an “implosion” coming soon for the NFL, citing greed.
Here is what he said during his pre-game interview with reporters before the Mavericks played the Nets on Sunday night, per ESPN Dallas
“I think the NFL is 10 years away from an implosion,” Cuban said Sunday evening when his pregame conversation with reporters, which covered a broad range of topics, swayed toward football. “I’m just telling you, pigs get fat, hogs get slaughtered. And they’re getting hoggy. Just watch. Pigs get fat, hogs get slaughtered. When you try to take it too far, people turn the other way.
“I’m just telling you, when you’ve got a good thing and you get greedy, it always, always, always, always, always turns on you. That’s rule number one of business.”
It is hard to envision a world where the NFL does not rule all, and I think the increase in player safety, and thus less violent collisions may ultimately be the fall of the NFL empire. As much as player safety is a necessity, the NFL without big hits essentially becomes the Arena Football League, which struggles extremely to gain popularity in mainstream society.
When you combine Cuban’s argument with the aforementioned one, you can see a scenario where football loses its crown as America’s most popular sport. Even then, it may be a stretch. Only time will tell.
