Michael Kidd-Gilchrist on stuttering: “It’s who I am”
On the court, MKG is amazing to watch. He plays with a certain heart and energy that very few players can match. In an era where athletes are always taking plays off, MKG is adored by many fans for his raw passion and the way he competes.
That being said, sometimes we forget that athletes are human too; college athletes, particularly. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist is only 18 years old!
As some of us have found out through various interviews and media interactions, MKG has a speech impediment. He has a noticeable stutter and uses “um” consistently in between thoughts. For the record, joking about this kind of thing is completely out of bounds and is by no means funny. At all.
The 18 year old Bobcat has battled this his entire life. However, he seems to have come to terms with it to an extent.
“It’s a part of me. It’s who I am.” Kidd-Gilchrist said of his stuttering.
Good for him. This has to be an extremely difficult matter to deal with on a daily basis for anyone, let alone someone who is constantly on the national stage.
Michael Kidd-Gilchrist has had to grow up fairly quick. Before he turns 19 years old, he will have won a national championship and been drafted second overall by NBA legend Michael Jordan.
He has been taking various measures to overcome this. This is a feel good story for an 18 year old to handle himself so well despite this struggle on such a large stage. He really is one of the guys that you want to see succeed, no matter what team you support.
Michael Kidd-Gilchrist averaged 12 points, 8 rebounds, 1 steal, and 1 block last season at Kentucky. He was known for his ability to guard almost any player on the floor with great success.
