The downward spiral of an NBA career will continue today for the former 2nd overall pick Darko Milicic, as it is being reported that the Minnesota Timberwolves will use their amnesty clause on him. The ship has sailed on Milicic’s career in terms of being justified as the #2 pick over the likes of Carmelo Anthony, Chris Bosh, and Dwyane Wade, but hopefully he can find a way to salvage his career in some fashion.
Milicic showed some promise when originally coming over to the Timberwolves, averaging career highs in points and blocks in the 2010-2011 season. Unfortunately, that did not carry over to this lockout-shortened season, and Milicic is back to where he has been much of his NBA career, a disappointment.
For the Timberwolves, this is mostly a financial decision. Milicic is owed just about $11 million over the next two seasons, and the move will save them just over $5 million, giving them more cap flexibility to go after some free agents. The Timberwolves main target was Portland forward Nicolas Batum, who they offered a luxurious offer sheet. However, all signs point to Portland matching the offer sheet given.
