NBA team interested in Jason Collins
The Detroit Pistons have expressed interest in free agent center Jason Collins. According to ESPN, the Pistons have contacted Collins, but no contract offer has been made for the 7-foot veteran. Collins became the first openly gay athlete in North America’s four traditional major sports leagues this past April.
There hasn’t been a ton of interest from NBA teams for Collins and it doesn’t have anything to do with his sexual orientation. Collins’ play has been declining over the years and as what Western Conference scout put it, “he’s been an end-of-the-roster kind of player for the last couple years.”
Collins has been working out in hopes of playing a 13th NBA season. It is encouraging to see the Pistons engage in talks with Jason, but even if he were to sign with the Pistons he would be an insurance policy. This could be the end of the line for Collins if the Pistons don’t offer him a contract as another general manager has previously stated that he thinks Collins days in the NBA are numbered.
Said another veteran general manager in late April: “I don’t think he was going to be in the league next season no matter what. I don’t think [sexual orientation] is the issue. I think ‘Can he still play?’ is the issue.”
