Patrick Patterson says he wouldn’t start Kevin Martin if he were the coach

A lot has been going on with the Houston Rockets this offseason. Of course, they made the big splash by signing point guard Jeremy Lin to be the face of the franchise; I’ll leave whether that was a good idea for another time. Then, the team signed Bulls backup big man Omer Asik to big bucks. A guy who averaged 3 points per game last year, mind you.

And amongst all this was the chatter surrounding the possibility of bringing Dwight Howard. After compiling assets to acquire D12, nothing happened, and the team was left with a lot of draft picks. They spent three first-round picks on Jeremy Lamb, Royce White, and Terrence Jones. They also let Goran Dragic leave for Phoenix, traded wing man Chase Buddinger to Minnesota, amnestied Luis Scola, and acquired a first-round pick for next year’s draft from the Toronto Raptors.

So yeah, you could say it’s been a busy few months for the Houston Rockets. Now, power forward Patrick Patterson is stirring the pot a little bit.

Recently in an interview, Patrick Patterson was asked what the starting lineup would look like if he was Kevin McHale, the team’s head coach. Watch below to see what he had to say.

Everything here seems pretty normal, with one exception; he said he would start rookie Jeremy Lamb out of UConn over Kevin Martin. Yes, the Kevin Martin who has averaged 23 and 17 points per game the past two seasons, making him the team’s leading scorer.

Given, many people around think the league believe that Kevin Martin is overpaid, a bit overrated, etc. But Patrick Patterson is really slapping him in the face by saying that he would start this year’s 12th overall pick over Kevin Martin.

This is significant coming from a guy like Patrick Patterson, who only averaged 8 points and 5 rebounds last season.

We’ll see what Kevin Martin has to say about this, if anything. But this upcoming season could get very interesting very quickly for the Houston Rockets.
