The New Orleans Pelicans already made an offseason splash by drafting, and then trading Nerlens Noel to the Philadelphia 76ers for Jrue Holiday. However, it looks like that may only be the start of the shakeup in New Orleans. Multiple reports indicate that the Pelicans have their sights set on Sacramento Kings restricted free agent Tyreke Evans, and are even prepared to offer him a four year deal with more than 40 million dollars. Some reports even indicate the team may go as high as 44 million.

Here are some additional details courtesy of SportingNews:

The Pelicans entered free agency looking to make a splash as the franchise looks to pull itself out of the doldrums of the post-Chris Paul era, and the target of that splash is an odd one: Kings swingman and former Rookie of the Year Tyreke Evans.

A source told Sporting News that the Pelicans’ offer is in the range of four years and $40 million, and that New Orleans hopes to bring Evans off the bench in a Manu Ginobili-style role.

NBA.com’s David Aldridge is the one reporting the slightly inflated figure of 44 million. Either way, that is a ton of money for a team that:

A. Just acquired a starting point guard in Holiday, and has a starting quality backup in Greavis Vazquez, who emerged last season and

B. Just signed a shooting guard, Eric Gordon, to the max LAST off season.

Obviously, there would need to be additional moves made, and my gut tells me Gordon would be the odd man out. On the other hand, finding a taker for his services considering his salary and injury concerns may be a tough task. You have to admire the Pelicans for taking a shot though, and not standing pat…though putting this type of money into Evans, who aside from his Rookie of the Year campaign has probably been a slight disappointment, may not be the wisest move.

We are just getting started in the off season discussions, and I am already ready for basketball to be back.
