Minnesota Timberwolves star forward Kevin Love is putting the pressure on General Manager David Kahn to make some moves, and make them fast. Love told Marc Spears of Yahoo! Sports that if the Timberwolves do not make drastic improvements next season, he may want out of Minnesota.
This statement is very peculiar to me for a few different reasons, mainly being that Kevin Love agreed to a five-year extension not too long ago. Also, Minnesota has been extremely aggressive this off-season, and have been very active trying to acquire talent, including Chase Budinger, Brandon Roy, and even took a run at Ray Allen. It isn’t like the Timberwolves management are sitting on their hands and just hoping for the best.
Regardless, whatever they are doing, Love wants it done fairly quickly. Here is an excerpt from his interview with Spears: “If we don’t make the playoffs, I don’t know it’s going to be me or something, but our management needs to step up and make some moves.” Those words are pretty strong to say the least.
From a competitive standpoint, it is easy to understand Love’s frustrations to a degree. All of these guys want to win, and they want to play for championships. I just think Love needs to be patient, and let this young team grow. If he is thinking that the Timberwolves are going to build a super-team in Minnesota, then he is sadly mistaken. The Timberwolves need to make moves and build from the bottom up ala the OKC Thunder. They aren’t going to go out and acquire a Robin to Love’s Batman. This isn’t L.A Mr. Love, that’s not how things operate in the NBA for small market teams.
Love is right! This team wallows in the lowest region of the standings thanks to Kahn’s timidity (stupidity?) and the owner’s miserliness. They really need to do something dramatic to help the team. [Love is also wrong: he was with the team long enough to know Kahn is not a great basketball mind and he should never have taken the extension for only 4 years, which is a testimony to owner cheapness].
