Roy Hibbert to grant a fan’s last wish

  • Frank Santos

Every once in awhile, an athlete does something publicly that sheds a positive light on the sports world rather than the negativity we usually see. This is one such case. Indiana Pacers big man Roy Hibbert will grant a fan’s last wish.

12  year-old Lee Eddins, who was diagnosed with stage four Leukemia earlier this year, was hoping to see Hibbert play live when the NBA season rolled around, only to receive some heartbreaking news: he is not expected to live that long. So Hibbert, who usually has a tough time seeing children in such tough positions, is planning a special surprise visit to grant his biggest fan’s dying wish:

Roy Hibbert will grant 12 year-old Lee Eddins his dying wish: to meet him.

Once I heard he had a dying wish, I knew I had to do something more than send him presents and Skype with him on the computer. I’m usually uncomfortable going to hospitals when the Pacers do events because it’s pretty tough to see kids in that situation. Once I heard about Lee, I realized I had to get over it and do it for him….It’s tough. I seriously don’t know what I’m going to say to Lee. I’m just going to be myself. If I can get a smile out of him that will be great.’”

This is sure to be a humbling experience for Hibbert, although he seems to already be a humble guy. A lot of athletes donate to charity and visit hospitals as part of team obligations, but there’s something much more special about a guy who makes it personal. Hats off to you, Mr. Hibbert, you’re setting an example to follow.

  • Thank you Roy. It’s great to see some compassion and love from athletes such as yourself. God will reward you.

  • Stand Up Guy….

  • you are a good man !!!!
why didn’t you come to the lakers

  • Funny how when an African-American sports figure do something positive only three comments! Yet let this had been about him fathering three kids out of wedlock or getting arrested, it would have been threethousandpeople commenting. SMH

  • You are a quality individual and a bright shining light in a pro world of sports marked by selfishness. Much respect sir, much respect.

  • Hibbert is a class act. I always love seeing these types of articles as opposed to the other kinds.

  • @lorenzo… why make something so nice about race? ya some people suck we know but it doesnt need to consume everything in your life.. good on ya roy more athletes need to follow tour lead

  • Roy Hibbert is a superstar on and way more importantly off the court!!! Thanks for standing up way above the crowd!

  • You are what human compassion is all about. Being an athlete I wish more people knew about this story. Bravo Roy H……..

  • Awesome work Roy. I wish more pro athletes had half the compassion that you do.

  • Yes, I agree with the above people. I am a born again christian, and I don’t know alot of things, but one thing I do know, is that when a public figure does something so positive, as opposed to the usual negativity, it can have a major impact! I’m so proud when I see someone setting Great examples instead of the usual! And I know that God will honor that, and he will have a special place for someone who shows such love and compassion!!! God Bless you Roy Hibbert!!!

  • I just became RH a fan

  • I just became an RH fan

  • I hve been a RH fan since G’Town. Not because of his abilities, but because of his humbleness and willinginess fight through adversity. I know how hard this must be for you and the personal sacrifice your making. Admitting publiclly a personal issue and fighting through it for the benifit of others….. This is a Citizen I my sons to read about.

  • YES ROY YOU ARE A GOOD MAN FOR WHAT YOU ARE DOING WE NEED MORE PEOPLE LIKE YOU AND I KNOW THE YOUNG BOY AND HIS FAMILY WHERE VERY HAPPY TOO KNOW THANKS ROY GOD BLESS

  • I always liked your game. Your compansion for someone like this far out weighs anything you do on the court. I will look at you in a differnet light the next time I see you play remembering who you are not only for what you do on the court but mostly what you do off. You are standing very tall in my eyes. Don’t ever change.

  • There is a need for more Athletes like this gentleman. God has already Blessed him and will continue to do so. Hopefully the time he will spend ewith the Young Man will bring a Smile to everyone and a great feint in Roy’s Heart. Well done may God Bless you

  • This made me proud to like Roy Hibbert as a player and a person!!!

  • MR.Hibbert, your a stand up guy. I knew the portland trailblazers let go a top notch person, on and off the court

  • Yes Big Roy just be yourself I know it’s tough man love you man… Hoyanation…

  • Great move, Mr. Hibbert. The extra added bonus to all of this is your representation of Georgetown big men, who are typically generous men (especially Mutombo and Mourning). God bless you, brother!!

  • I’m a Carolina man but, I just became an RH fan.

  • Even a Bulls fan like myself can appreciate a Pacer with a heart like yours. Thank you for representing the human race in a manner that reflects well on all of us. Good luck in the future (except when you are playing my Bulls).

  • FANTASTIC RESPONSE TO ROY BUT LEBRON JAMES DOES GOOD DEEDS FOR YOUTH YEAR ROUND. MAYBE IF WE LEAVE POLITICS OUT OF SPORTS WE WOULD ENCOURAGE MORE ATHLETS TO DO MORE GOOD DEEDS INSTEAD OF FIGHTING ALL YEAR TO MAINTAIN THERE SANITY.

  • I too am so proud to be a Big Roy fan and am doubly glad that the Pacers re-signed him. Since Reggie (Miller) retired the Pacers have struggled to have quality role models for our children.(ie Ron Artest et.al) Roy is a quality person as well as a quality player. See you at the fieldhouse RH!

  • for all of you with the positive comments about roy horay but Lebron James does that kind of stuff year round, why not applaud him too.

  • God bless the 12 year-old Lee Eddins. I hope his wish coming true warms his heart and brings him peace.

Thank you Roy for standing up for all of us who care..
    :-)

  • You sir, are a real hero, just show the young man love.

  • I guess i’m the only one on here that doesn’t like basketball, i haven’t watched since the Bulls last Three-Peat . With that being said ; it’s great to see a professional athlete who actually gives a damn about his fans ! More athletes should take a que from Roy Hibbert, & be a decent human being & not do it because they’re obligated to do so because of their teams, & contracts !

  • U CAN TELL HE HAS A G-TOWN EDUCATION AND A D-M-V UPBRINGING.WHEN 1 IS IN NEED YOU CAN EXPECT A BIG FELLOW TO PRODUCE.

  • Roy you are a hero, a stand-up guy and you have an 7″2 tall heart…you got a fan 4 life much respect

  • Dang, why did you have to match the offer, Indiana (Blazer fan here)? 😉

In any case, this just proves the Blazers knew what they were doing offering him a max contract. This guy is the real deal on and off the court, what a great human being!
