Shaquille O’Neal and Penny Hardaway together again?
Way back before any MVP trophies, NBA Finals championships and a thousand nicknames, Shaquille O’Neal was a member of the Orlando Magic. Being the first round pick in 1992, Shaq formed one of the best duos of the 1990s alongside Penny Hardwaway. The two led the Magic to their first NBA Finals appearance in 1995, but would ultimately get swept by the Houston Rockets. Now, as part of their “Legends night” program, the Magic will invite arguably the two most popular players in their franchise’s history.
Via Orlando Sentinel:
The Magic hope so. As part of their season long celebration of their 25th anniversary as an NBA franchise, the club is planning on inviting Shaquille O’Neal to be recognized before a game.
The Magic are embracing their past as well as their future, planning to invite other former stars to town, such as Penny Hardaway.
For myself, growing up and watching hoops in the ’90s, Shaq and Penny were the young cool, duo. Of course it was short-lived as Shaq bolted for the Los Angeles Lakers in 1996. But just like all of Shaq’s other stops in the NBA during his prime, you get left with feeling of what could have been had O’Neal stayed in Orlando.
