Should Monta Ellis Come Off The Bench?
Earlier this week on ESPN’s Pardon The Interruption, Michael Wilbon said that Monta Ellis can still be a really good player in this league, but that it is time for him to come off the bench. Certainly Monta Ellis is talented enough to be a starting combo guard for more than half the teams in the NBA , but how many of those teams are serious contenders? The answer would be zero.
Monta Ellis is opting out of his contract with the Bucks presumably because he wants to be on a contending team. It’s cool that he wants to contend for a title, but the reality is no contending team is going to sign him as a #2 option. He averaged 19.2 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 6.0 assists for the Bucks this past season, so he certainly is capable to be a serious contributor to a lot of teams. But his services just might be best utilized on a contending team coming off the bench as a spark plug like Jamal Crawford has been for the Clippers rather than being a starter who is trying to carry the scoring load for his team.
