The New Orleans Hornets to change their name to the Pelicans

In a move that has me as baffled as it does you, the New Orleans Hornets are set to change their name to the New Orleans Pelicans. Yes, your read that right. A bird that is not generally known for it’s predatory instincts, such as a Hawk, or an Eagle.

The generally non-aggressive and lovable looking Pelican will serve as the new heart and soul of NBA basketball in the Big Easy.

In a report from Marc Spears of Yahoo! Sports today explaining that the Hornets have settled on the name change. The Hornets’ name was carried over from when they were the Charlotte Hornets. A name much better suited for a team based in North Carolina, rather than New Louisiana. Once Tom Benson, owner of the New Orleans Saints bought the Hornets’ franchise from the league, we all knew it was only a matter of time before the unfitting name was changed.

Although, I personally don’t love the new name, I do agree that the name Hornets had to go and hopefully the Pelican name grows on us all.

The original New Orleans based basketball team was known as the Jazz, before they moved to Utah, where consequently no Jazz music is played. But being the length of time that Utah has owned the name “Jazz”, the likelihood of them handing it over to the city for which it belongs was slim.

The only good that may come out of this is perhaps now the Charlotte Bobcats can go back to being the Charlotte Hornets. Being that the name “Bobcats” is lame and nobody really cares much for it.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, I beg you, Michael Jordan! Give Charlotte back their rightful name now that it’s not being wrongfully used in a state that didn’t even want it to begin with.
