Bruce Arians plans to add another linebacker
In wake of pro bowl linebacker Daryl Washington‘s expected suspension to be handed down by the league, the Arizona Cardinals and Bruce Arians wish to add another linebacker to their depth chart– via Jess Root of Revenge of the Birds.
Update: The Cardinals linebacker could potentially face a longer suspension than expected–report by Josh Sanchez of Fansided.
With his suspension pending, and the recent departure of Karlos Dansby, the team’s depth chart at linebacker is sure to be tested in 2014. Last season both Dansby and Washington(after serving a four-game suspension) were at the helm, playing in just about every snap for the Cardinals, and they did not disappoint. Now in their absences, (Washington’s pending) it could be inside linebacker-by-committee, as the Cardinals depth chart at least at this point in OTA’s, (Organized Team Activities) seems to lack the luster of what was observed the year prior.
Second-year pro Kevin Minter is expected to fill the void left by Dansby, but he is still a raw commodity, especially after sitting on the bench for most all of his rookie season, due to injury. Veteran Larry Foote was brought in to possibly help the cause too, but with him also coming off and injury last season as well, it is not certain how he will recover from that. And being that this will be his 12th year in the league, it remains to be seen just what or how the 33-year-old can contribute to the Cardinals defense. If anything, Foote can be a mentor to Minter.
Lorenzo Alexander who normally plays outside linebacker, has been taking reps at ILB, but there is very little experience after that.
For coach Arians, it has become all the reason he said that he would the team would search for players available, or that become available, to come in, and bolster the lineup.
“I’d like to add another player if there’s one possible that could beat this line,” he said to reporters after practice on Tuesday. “I like some of our young guys and a couple of the rookies are looking okay. So we’ll just see how it goes.” quote provided by Jess Root of ROTB.
Sure there is players available, and that may become available out there on the market, but one thing is for certain, they may never find anybody who will have the same impact as a guy like Dansby did, and the absence of Washington no matter how long it is, will certainly affect the team as well.
