The Arizona Diamondbacks announced on Monday that starting pitcher Trevor Cahill has been recalled while Mike Bolsinger has been optioned to Triple-A Reno. Cahill was designated for assignment on June 9th. Once he cleared waivers he was optioned all the way down to High-A Visalia to work on his mechanics after a dreadful start to the 2014 season.

As for Mike Bolsinger, the D-backs originally recalled the young pitcher in the middle of June after he had a tremendous start to the season for Triple-A Reno. He compiled a 5-1 record to go along with a 2.73 ERA and seemed like he was certainly MLB ready. Unfortunately he was, and is not as we have seen in a majority of his nine starts this season, his 1-6 record and 5.50 ERA certainly echo those sentiments.

To put the roller coaster ride that is Trevor Cahill into perspective he started this season in the Diamondbacks starting rotation, but only survived four starts. Allowing 18 runs in 17.2 innings, Cahill was then demoted to the bullpen in hopes that he would turn things around and possibly rejoin the rotation at some point this season.

Cahill did indeed pitch better out of the bullpen, throwing 23.2 innings to go along with a respectable 3.04 ERA. That was not enough to keep him from being designated for assignment in early June leaving fans optimistic and entirely unsure about his future in Arizona. To make matters worse, he entered this season looking careless, overweight and all around out of shape.

In his first start for High-A Visalia Cahill did anything but impress as he only lasted two innings while allowing four runs. Though since then it seems as if Cahill is getting the movement he expects on his sinker while finally regaining the confidence he has lost the last few seasons. Throughout his six starts for Reno Cahill is 2-2 with a 3.49 ERA through 28.1 innings, but has also walked 20 batters which displays his erratic release and inability to hit the strike zone consistently.

The D-backs have also announced their post All-Star break starting rotation. Cahill will start on Friday against the Chicago Cubs followed by Wade Miley, Josh Collmenter, Vidal Nuno and Chase Anderson.
