Although it comes as not much of a surprise, Kirk Gibson has named Patrick Corbin the Opening Day starter for the Diamondbacks’ contest in Australia against the Dodgers.

Corbin was by far the Diamondbacks’ best pitcher last year, finishing the year at 14-8 with a 3.41 ERA and his first All-Star appearance.

What does come as a bit more of a surprise, however, is that Trevor Cahill will start in the second game in Australia against Los Angeles the next day.

Cahill went 8-10 last year, with a 3.99 ERA. Though Cahill was wildly inconsistent, he didn’t lose a game over the final two months of the year. Hopefully he can turn that momentum into a win against the defending NL West champion Dodgers.
