The Diamondbacks recall Didi Gregorius, place Cliff Pennington on DL
The Arizona Diamondbacks have recalled shortstop Didi Gregorius from Triple-A Reno and placed utility infielder Cliff Pennington on the 15-day DL with a sprained ligament in his thumb. This is another untimely injury for the Diamondbacks who have had a plethora of them recently. A.J. Pollock had surgery a few days ago to repair a broken hand and is expected to miss around two months. The injury was suffered from being hit by a pitch from Johnny Cueto of the Cincinnati Reds.
Matt Reynolds, Patrick Corbin, David Hernandez, J.J. Putz, Daniel Hudson, Mark Trumbo, A.J. Pollock and now Cliff Pennington have all missed a portion of this season due to injury. This plethora of injuries has given players like Tony Campana, Ender Inciarte, Alfredo Marte, Zeke Spruill, Nick Evans, and David Peralta have all been recalled during different times this season in an effort to relatively replace those hurt players. Most of these young prospects did not make enough of an impact and were sent back down to the minors.

It should be interesting to see what role Gregorius plays considering Chris Owings is the everyday starter at shortstop. Gregorius can play second base as a backup position so expect to see him in the lineup when Aaron Hill needs a day off. With a (23-36) record it would come as no surprise to see Gregorius get more playing time than originally expected. Many fans even anticipated the Diamondbacks to deal Gregorius, and the New York Mets are and have beem an interested team. At this point if Gregorius shines, progresses and impresses during this call-up, then expect to see his name in even more trade rumours.
